The start: As an avid lover of animals I wanted to work with the local shelters for a long time but wasn’t sure how exactly to help. While visiting a friend at their business in Old Forge, I kept hearing how excited everybody was about all the dogs in the local shops while petting the business’ new puppy Zona and from that point I knew I had something that was great. I contacted several businesses with my idea: the Dogs About Town: Old Forge calendar, with 60% of the proceeds going to my county’s Humane Society. While taking the pictures of the animals at the businesses I met some of the great volunteers & board members of the Humane Society and told them my plan. The calendar came out on July 2012, and with only about 15 left; I eventually reached my goal of raising $2500 for the Herkimer County Humane Society by the end of December.
A step further: In July after my calendar had hit stores, and my show “Human Kind’s Best Friend” started, I decided I wanted to get even more involved with the shelters. I contacted both the Herkimer County Humane Society and the Human Society of Rome to start taking new adoption photos for their animals. Since starting I have become the chief photographer at HCHS which includes November’s Paws with Claus. In 2013 I hope to add one or two more Rescues into the mix.

I can’t begin to explain the joy I feel every time I find out one of the animals has been adopted, and it’s even better when the owners keep me informed of their new family members. While it is bittersweet to see my “favorite” animals get adopted, it is also great to know that they will be happy and another animal will be helped in their stead. I now spend one if not both of my days off every week at one shelter or another. HCHS has become like a second home to me and I look forward to seeing not only the animals but all the workers who I consider friends & family.
